How it's made

A scaly cap, a round little nut and a leaf on the stem. Here's an acorn from simple squares.

An acorn is the nut of an oak tree. Squirrels bury them for winter, and the ones they forget can grow into oaks.

Cream corners on opposite sides turn a green square into a leaf. Sew it beside a brown stem.

Cream corners on the top of a brown rectangle round off the cap. The crosshatch print looks just like its scales.

Bigger corners on the bottom of the caramel give the nut its round, tapered tip.

Sew the three rows together with a cream strip above and below, so every acorn has room to breathe.

Twelve acorns and a brown border make a cosy autumn throw.

About this quilt

A little acorn with a scaly cap and a leaf on its stem, pieced from squares and rectangles with stitch-and-flip corners: no curves, no templates. 12½″ unfinished (12″ finished).

CUT • Cream: two 12½ × 1½″, one 6 × 2½″, one 4 × 2½″, two 2½ × 3½″, two 3½ × 5½″, two 3″ squares, two 2″ squares, two 1¼″ squares • Chocolate brown: one 8½ × 3½″ (cap), one 1½ × 2½″ (stem) • Caramel: one 6½ × 5½″ (nut) • Olive green: one 2½″ square (leaf)

MAKE • Leaf: cream 1¼″ squares on two opposite corners of the green 2½″, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Stem row: cream 6 × 2½″, brown stem, leaf (pointing up and out), cream 4 × 2½″ • Cap: cream 2″ squares on the top corners of the brown 8½ × 3½″, stitch and flip; a cream 2½ × 3½″ each side • Nut: cream 3″ squares on the bottom corners of the caramel 6½ × 5½″, stitch and flip; a cream 3½ × 5½″ each side • Sew the stem row, cap and nut together with a cream 12½ × 1½″ strip at the top and bottom

TIP: a crosshatch or small plaid for the cap looks just like an acorn's scales.

OTHER SIZES: for a 6″ acorn, halve every finished size and add ½″ for seams.

Would you make yours in caramel or a deep rust? 🍂
