How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a pretty little basket block today, ready for spring.
Baskets are one of quilting's best-loved block families. This one's all triangles and strips, so even the handle has no curves.
Let's start with the handle. Sew mint squares onto opposite corners of a chestnut square, then make another and turn it.
Next come the triangles for the weave. Sew a pink square to a tan one on the diagonal, then cut, press and trim.
Make five, all turned the same way, and sew them in a row.
Add a chestnut rim on top and a tan base below, with mint corners flipped on to slope the sides.
Now lay out the mint background: strips above and below, and small pieces either side.
Sew the handle row and the basket row, then join everything up. Your basket measures twelve and a half inches.
Twelve baskets in a row make a sweet spring quilt.

About this quilt
A pieced basket block, ready for spring: a sawtooth row of triangles for the weave, a chestnut rim, a sloped base and a handle with no curves. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Chestnut: two 4½″ squares (handle) and one 10½ × 1½″ strip (rim) • Tan: three 2⅞″ squares and one 10½ × 2½″ strip (base) • Pink gingham: three 2⅞″ squares • Mint: four 3½″ squares, two 2½″ squares, a 12½ × 2½″ and a 12½ × 1½″ strip, two 2½ × 4½″ and two 1½ × 5½″ rectangles
MAKE • Handle: sew mint 3½″ squares onto opposite corners of each chestnut square, trim and press; turn one a quarter so the two meet in a peak • Weave: layer pink on tan 2⅞″ squares, sew ¼″ each side of the diagonal, cut, press and trim to 2½″. Sew five in a row, all the same way (one is spare) • Basket: sew mint 2½″ squares onto the bottom corners of the tan strip; sew rim, weave and base together • Sew the handle row (mint, handle, handle, mint) and the basket row (mint, basket, mint), then join the top strip, handle row, basket row and bottom strip
TIP: sew the opposite corners of each handle square one at a time, so the second square lies flat.
