How it's made
Red and white stripes that run unbroken round the hook, from just two squares.
There's no striped fabric here. Each stripe is two halves of neighbouring triangles, and turning every other one lines them up.
Layer white on red and sew a quarter inch each side of both diagonals. Four cuts make eight triangles.
Press toward the red and trim all eight to two and a half inches.
Turn them so every seam runs uphill, then stack six in a column, alternating red and white at the top. The stripes join up.
A green corner on a red square starts the curve, and a small white corner smooths the inside. Sew them with two triangles.
A green rectangle fills in under the hook. Sew it to the shaft, and a small green corner rounds the top.
Green strips all round give the cane room to breathe, so canes in a quilt never touch.
Twelve canes and a red border make a cheerful Christmas lap quilt.

About this quilt
A striped candy cane for Christmas, and there's no striped fabric in it: every stripe is two halves of neighbouring half-square triangles. 10½ × 14½″ unfinished (10 × 14″ finished).
CUT • Red: one 5¾″ square, one 2½″ square • White: one 5¾″ square, one 1½″ square • Holly green: two 2½″ squares, one 1½″ square, one 4½ × 8½″, two 2½ × 12½″, two 10½ × 1½″
MAKE • Eight at once: layer the white 5¾″ square on the red, sew ¼″ each side of both diagonals, then cut through the middle both ways and on both diagonals • Press toward the red and trim all eight to 2½″ • Turn them so every seam runs uphill (bottom left to top right) • Shaft: sew six in a column, alternating which colour sits at the top, so the stripes join up • Hook: a green 2½″ square on the top-left corner of the red 2½″ (stitch and flip), the two last triangles, and a green 2½″ square with a white 1½″ corner inside the curve; sew two rows of two • Sew the green 4½ × 8½″ under the hook, then the shaft to its right • Round the top-right corner with a green 1½″ square • Frame with the green 2½ × 12½″ sides and 10½ × 1½″ top and bottom
TIP: pin at every seam in the shaft; when the seams meet, the stripes meet.
OTHER SIZES: for chunkier stripes, cut the big squares 7¾″, trim to 3½″, cut the red and green squares 3½″ and the fill 6½ × 12½″.
