How it's made

Hi there! Let's deal out a classic card trick block in coral and teal. Can you spot all four cards?

The card trick is an old favourite nine-patch. Four cards seem to overlap, but it's all just triangles.

First, pair up your squares: cream with coral, cream with teal, and coral with teal. Sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal.

Cut them apart on the line, press, and snip off the dog ears.

Now for the sides: lay cream and coral on plain teal, cream and teal on plain coral, and the coral and teals together. Sew either side of the other diagonal.

Cut, press, and trim everything to four and a half inches, corners too. Keep one of each side unit; the mirror-image spares start a twin block.

Make two of everything but the centre. Then lay it out so the cards overlap, and sew three rows of three.

Ta-da, four cards! Sixteen of them make a cheerful games-night quilt.

Save this one for your next games night. Design your own quilt like this at quiltler.com.

About this quilt

The card trick block: four cards that seem to overlap, in coral and teal. A nine-patch of half- and quarter-square triangles, 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Cream: four 5¼″ squares • Coral: three 5¼″ squares and two 4⅞″ squares • Teal: three 5¼″ squares and two 4⅞″ squares

MAKE • Pair each cream 5¼″ with a coral or teal one, and the last coral with the last teal. Sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal, cut, press and trim the dog ears: 4⅞″ triangle squares • Corners: trim two cream/coral and two cream/teal to 4½″ • Sides: lay a cream/coral triangle square on a teal 4⅞″, and a cream/teal one on a coral 4⅞″. Sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal that crosses the seam, cut, press and trim to 4½″. Each pair gives one side unit and one mirror-image spare; make two of each • Centre: lay the two coral/teal triangle squares together, coral facing teal, sew either side of the other diagonal, cut and trim to 4½″ • Lay out so the cards overlap and sew three rows of three

TIP: keep the spares. With four more corners they make a mirror-image twin block.

OTHER SIZES: cut the pairs 1¼″ over the finished unit and the plain squares ⅞″ over. For a 9″ block: 4¼″ and 3⅞″, trimmed to 3½″.

Two colours, or four colours for four cards?
