How it's made

A round red bauble with a gold cap and a hanging loop, and not a single curved seam.

Glass baubles were first blown in Germany. In fabric, the round comes from snowball corners: sew a square on the corner and flip it.

Start at the top. Round a little gold bar with navy corners, then sew it over a navy square between two gold posts. That's the hanging loop.

A gold rectangle is the cap. Navy each side brings both rows to twelve and a half inches, with a navy strip on top.

Now the ball. Sew navy squares corner to corner on two red rectangles, trim and flip, and the corners turn round.

A white band trimmed in gold goes across the middle, like a painted glass ornament. Navy strips frame the sides.

Join the cap to the ball with a navy strip below, so neighbouring baubles never touch. Then hang it up.

Nine baubles and a red border make a festive wall hanging.

About this quilt

A round Christmas bauble with a gold cap and a hanging loop, all from straight seams: the round is snowball corners. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).

CUT • Navy: four 3½″ squares, two 1″ squares, one 1½″ square, two 5½ × 2½″, two 4½ × 2″, two 1½ × 9½″, one 12½ × 1″, one 12½ × 1½″ • Red: two 10½ × 3½″ • White: one 10½ × 2½″ • Gold: two 10½ × 1″, one 4½ × 2″, one 2½ × 1½″, two 1 × 1½″

MAKE • Loop: navy 1″ squares on the top corners of the gold 2½ × 1½″, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip; sew it above gold post, navy 1½″, gold post • Top rows: navy 5½ × 2½″ each side of the loop; navy 4½ × 2″ each side of the gold 4½ × 2″ cap; join with the navy 12½ × 1″ on top • Ball: navy 3½″ squares on the top corners of one red rectangle and the bottom corners of the other, stitch and flip • Sew red top, gold, white, gold, red bottom; add the navy 1½ × 9½″ sides • Join the top rows, the ball and the navy 12½ × 1½″ bottom

TIP: press the band seams toward the gold strips so the narrow gold lies flat and crisp.

OTHER SIZES: for an 18 × 21″ bauble, multiply each finished size by 1½ and add ½″: the red rectangles become 15½ × 5″ and their corners 5″.
