How it's made
A golden bell with a flared rim, a clapper and a red bow, from squares and rectangles.
A bell's clapper strikes the thick lip at its flared rim. In fabric, that flare is just two corners sewn and flipped.
Green corners on two red squares narrow them toward the middle. A cranberry knot between them ties the bow.
Green squares on the top corners of a gold rectangle round the shoulders of the bell.
The same corners on a wide gold strip flare the bell out. A bronze strip below is the lip.
Tiny green corners on a bronze square make a round clapper peeking out below.
Green rectangles each side bring every row to twelve and a half inches, so neighbouring bells never touch.
Join the rows top to bottom, with a green strip above and below. Ring in the season!
Nine bells and a red border make a merry wall hanging.

About this quilt
A golden Christmas bell with a flared rim, a clapper and a red bow, pieced from squares and rectangles: every curve and flare is a stitch-and-flip corner. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).
CUT • Green: four 2½″ squares, four 1½″ squares, four 1″ squares, two 4 × 2½″, two 3½ × 5½″, two 1½ × 3½″, two 5½ × 2½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • Gold: one 6½ × 5½″, one 10½ × 2½″ • Bronze: one 10½ × 1½″, one 2½″ square • Red: two 2½″ squares • Cranberry: one 1½ × 2½″
MAKE • Bow: green 1½″ squares on the two inner corners of each red 2½″ square, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip; sew them each side of the cranberry knot • Bell: green 2½″ squares on the top corners of the gold 6½ × 5½″ • Flare: green 2½″ squares on the top corners of the gold 10½ × 2½″; sew the bronze 10½ × 1½″ lip below • Clapper: green 1″ squares on all four corners of the bronze 2½″ square • Frame each row with green: 4 × 2½″ by the bow, 3½ × 5½″ by the bell, 1½ × 3½″ by the flare, 5½ × 2½″ by the clapper • Join the rows with a green 12½ × 1½″ strip on top and bottom
TIP: on the flare, the corner squares are as tall as the strip; sew exactly corner to corner so the bell's sides meet the body without a jog.
OTHER SIZES: for an 18 × 21″ bell, multiply each finished size by 1½ and add ½″: the bell body becomes 9½ × 8″.
