How it's made
A glowing flame, a tall ivory candle and a sprig of holly, all from squares and strips.
Candles have lit the long nights of midwinter for centuries, and holly stays green when everything else is bare.
Gold corners on a little orange rectangle make a tongue of fire pointing up, the hot heart of the flame.
Gold above and orange below, then wine corners point the top and round the bottom of the flame.
Wine each side of the glow, then a tall ivory strip with wine each side makes the candle.
Wine corners on all four corners of a green rectangle make a pointed holly leaf. Make two.
Tiny green corners round two red squares into holly berries.
Sew the leaves either side of the berries, then join the rows with wine strips top and bottom.
Nine candles make a glowing Christmas wall hanging.

About this quilt
A glowing Christmas candle with a sprig of holly at its foot, pieced from squares and strips: no curves, no templates. 14½″ unfinished (14″ finished).
CUT • Gold: one 3½ × 2½″, two 1 × 1½″, two 1½″ squares • Orange: one 2½ × 1½″, one 3½ × 1½″ • Ivory: one 4½ × 6½″ • Holly green: two 4½ × 2½″, eight 1″ squares • Berry red: two 2½″ squares • Deep wine: two 2″ squares, ten 1½″ squares, two 6 × 4½″, two 5½ × 6½″, two 1½ × 2½″, two 14½ × 1½″
MAKE • Flame heart: gold 1½″ squares on the top corners of the orange 2½ × 1½″, stitch and flip; a gold 1 × 1½″ each side • Flame: gold 3½ × 2½″ above, orange 3½ × 1½″ below; then wine 2″ squares on the top corners and wine 1½″ on the bottom corners, stitch and flip • Sew a wine 6 × 4½″ each side of the flame • Candle: ivory 4½ × 6½″ with a wine 5½ × 6½″ each side • Leaves: wine 1½″ squares on all four corners of each green 4½ × 2½″ • Berries: green 1″ squares on all four corners of each red 2½″ square • Holly row: wine 1½ × 2½″, leaf, two berries, leaf, wine 1½ × 2½″ • Join the rows with a wine 14½ × 1½″ strip top and bottom
TIP: on the flame, sew the big corners after the flame is pieced, and the orange tongue stays sharp inside the gold.
