How it's made

Eight glowing points, and no diamonds or Y-seams. Here's a star for Christmas Eve.

Each point has a light gold side and a deep amber side, so the star seems to glow.

Layer gold and amber squares on navy ones, two and seven eighths inches, and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.

Cut, press toward the navy and trim to two and a half inches.

Sew a gold and an amber triangle into a point, with a gold and an amber square below. Make four.

For the short points, sew a gold and an amber square together the same way, then cut, press and trim.

Sew each one to three navy squares, amber side up. Make four corners.

Add a cranberry centre and turn each unit a quarter more, so the gold always leads.

Sew three rows of three. Your star measures twelve and a half inches.

Nine stars on a midnight sky.

About this quilt

A Christmas Eve star that seems to glow: every one of its eight points has a light gold side and a deep amber side. All half-square triangles and squares, with no diamonds and no Y-seams. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Navy: four 2⅞″ squares and twelve 2½″ squares • Light gold: four 2⅞″ squares and four 2½″ squares • Deep amber: four 2⅞″ squares and four 2½″ squares • Cranberry: one 4½″ square

MAKE • Points: layer two gold and two amber 2⅞″ squares on the navy ones, sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal, cut, press toward the navy and trim to 2½″ • Long points: sew a gold and an amber triangle so they meet in a point, with a gold and an amber 2½″ square below; make four • Short points: layer the other two gold 2⅞″ squares on the amber ones, sew, cut, press and trim to 2½″ • Corners: sew each short point to three navy 2½″ squares; make four • Lay out the corners, the long points and the cranberry centre, turning each unit a quarter more so the gold always leads; sew three rows of three

TIP: lay the whole star out before you sew. If you can follow gold, amber, gold, amber all the way round, every point is turned the right way.

OTHER SIZES: on a 1½″ grid it's a 9″ star: 2⅜″ triangle squares, 2″ squares and a 3½″ centre.
