How it's made
Four spinning points of gold on cranberry red. Here's the friendship star, the easiest star there is.
The friendship star is a long-time favourite for signature quilts and block swaps, with a name written in the middle. It's a nine-patch with four points.
Layer a gold and a red four and seven eighths inch square and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.
Cut on the line, press toward the red and trim both to four and a half inches.
Make a second pair. Then turn each point a quarter more than the last, so the star spins.
Add four red corners and a gold centre, all four and a half inches, with the points around the middle.
Sew three rows of three and join them. Your star measures twelve and a half inches.
Side by side, the red corners melt together and the gold stars twinkle across the quilt.

About this quilt
The friendship star in gold and cranberry red: four spinning points around a gold centre, the easiest star there is. A favourite for signature quilts and block swaps. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Gold: two 4⅞″ squares and one 4½″ square • Red: two 4⅞″ squares and four 4½″ squares
MAKE • Layer each gold 4⅞″ square on a red one, right sides together • Sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal, cut on the line and press toward the red • Trim the four half-square triangles to 4½″ • Lay out red corners, the gold centre and the four points, each turned a quarter more than the last so the star spins • Sew three rows of three and join them
TIP: before you sew, check every point's gold touches the centre square; one turned the wrong way breaks the spin.
OTHER SIZES: cut the triangle squares ⅞″ over the finished unit and the plain squares ½″ over. For a 9″ star: 3⅞″ and 3½″.
