How it's made

A red box, a gold ribbon and a big bow on top, all from squares and strips.

A present is one of the easiest picture blocks there is. The box is strips, and the bow is just snowball corners.

Stitch green squares on three corners of a gold square, trim and flip. Make two, and turn one so the loops face each other.

A deep gold square makes the knot, with green above it. Sew it between the loops.

Two red rectangles with a gold strip between make the top of the box. Make a second row the same.

A gold strip across the middle finishes the ribbon cross. Line up the gold strips so the ribbon runs straight.

Sew the bow on top, then frame it in green so the presents in a quilt never touch.

Nine presents and a red border make a quilt to wrap up in on Christmas morning.

About this quilt

A wrapped Christmas present with a gold ribbon cross and a big bow, pieced from squares and strips. The bow is just snowball corners. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).

CUT • Red: four 4½ × 3½″ • Gold: two 4½″ squares, two 2½ × 3½″, one 10½ × 2½″ • Deep gold: one 2½″ square • Pine green: seven 2½″ squares, two 1½ × 12½″, two 12½ × 1½″

MAKE • Bow loops: green 2½″ squares on three corners of each gold 4½″ square; stitch corner to corner, trim ¼″ past the line and press out • Turn one loop so the two plain corners face each other • Knot: the deep gold square with a green 2½″ above; sew it between the loops • Box rows: red 4½ × 3½″, gold 2½ × 3½″, red 4½ × 3½″; make two • Sew the gold 10½ × 2½″ strip between the box rows, lining up the ribbon • Sew the bow on top, then the green 1½ × 12½″ sides and 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom

TIP: press the box seams toward the red so the gold ribbon lies flat and bright.

OTHER SIZES: for a 6 × 7″ mini, cut the loops 2½″ with 1½″ corners, a 1½″ knot, red 2½ × 2″, gold 1½ × 2″ and a 5½ × 1½″ ribbon.
