How it's made

Four glowing bulbs on a wire, and in a quilt the wires join up.

Each bulb is a rectangle with snowballed corners, and all four sockets come from one quick strip set.

Sew a silver strip between two narrow navy ones, then cut four slices: four sockets in one go.

Cut a rectangle in each colour, then snowball navy squares onto all four corners to round it.

Do the same to the green and the blue.

Sew a socket to the top of each bulb. Turn the gold and blue upside down, so they point up from the wire.

Navy spacers set the bulbs three inches apart, the top row offset from the bottom.

A thin green strip between the rows is the wire. Navy strips top and bottom finish the block.

Side by side, the wires join into strings of lights right across the quilt.

About this quilt

A string of Christmas lights: four bright bulbs on a wire, made from rectangles with snowball corners. Sew the blocks side by side and the wires join into strings. 12½ × 11″ unfinished (12 × 10½″ finished).

CUT • Midnight navy: two 1 × 6″, sixteen 1″ squares, two 4 × 4½″, two 4½″ squares, two 1 × 4½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • Silver: one 1½ × 6″ • Red, gold and blue: one 2½ × 3½″ each • Bright green: one 2½ × 3½″, one 12½ × 1″

MAKE • Sockets: sew the silver strip between the navy 1 × 6″ strips and cut four 1½″ slices • Bulbs: a navy 1″ square on every corner of each 2½ × 3½″; stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Sew a socket to the top of each bulb; turn the gold and blue upside down • Top row: navy 4 × 4½″, gold, navy 4½″, blue, navy 1 × 4½″ • Bottom row: navy 1 × 4½″, red, navy 4½″, green, navy 4 × 4½″ • Sew the green 12½ × 1″ wire between the rows, then a navy 12½ × 1½″ strip top and bottom

TIP: the 1″ corners are tiny, so finger-press them before you trim, and sew a thread's width outside the line.

OTHER SIZES: two blocks side by side make a 24″ table runner, and the bulbs stay evenly spaced across the seam.

Which colour would you put on your string? ✨
