How it's made
A red stocking with a snowy cuff, a striped heel and a rounded toe. Here's how it goes together.
Legend says Saint Nicholas dropped gold coins into stockings hung by the fire to dry. We still hang them up every Christmas.
Sew a green square on one corner of the striped heel, trim and flip, so the back of the stocking curves. Add a red strip on top.
Two green corners round off the striped toe, top and bottom, at the front of the foot.
A red rectangle joins the heel to the toe, with a green strip past the toe.
A red square makes the leg. A small red corner on the green beside it softens the ankle into the foot.
The white cuff is half an inch wider than the leg each side, so it looks turned down. Frame it in green top and bottom so stockings never touch.
Nine stockings and a red border make a cheerful Christmas wall hanging.

About this quilt
A red Christmas stocking with a snowy cuff, a candy-striped heel and a rounded toe, all from squares and rectangles: no curves, no templates. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).
CUT • Green: one 2½″ square, two 2″ squares, one 2 × 4½″, one 6 × 5½″, one 2 × 9½″, one 1½ × 3½″, one 5½ × 3½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • Red: one 3½ × 1½″, one 3½ × 4½″, one 5½″ square, one 1½″ square • White: one 6½ × 3½″ • Stripe: one 3½″ square, one 3½ × 4½″
MAKE • Heel: a green 2½″ square on the bottom-left corner of the striped 3½″ square, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip; sew the red 3½ × 1½″ on top • Toe: green 2″ squares on both right-hand corners of the striped 3½ × 4½″ • Foot: heel, red 3½ × 4½″, toe, green 2 × 4½″ • Leg: the red 5½″ square beside the green 6 × 5½″ with a red 1½″ corner at its bottom left; sew it above the foot, then the green 2 × 9½″ down the left • Cuff row: green 1½ × 3½″, white 6½ × 3½″, green 5½ × 3½″; the cuff sits ½″ past the leg each side • Join the green 12½ × 1½″ top, the cuff row, the stocking and the green 12½ × 1½″ bottom
TIP: cut the stripe so it runs up and down the heel and toe; it reads like knitting.
OTHER SIZES: for an 18 × 21″ stocking, multiply each finished size by 1½ and add ½″: the leg becomes 8″ square.
