How it's made

Tiers of greenery, a little trunk and a gold star on top, all from stitch-and-flip corners.

Each tier is a flying goose stretched wider, and the little overhangs make the branches.

Cream corners turn a gold square into a twinkling star, and a green rectangle into a flying goose for the treetop.

Do the same on three longer rectangles, two shades of green, each two inches wider than the last.

Add a brown trunk, then cream at each side so every row is twelve and a half inches.

Sew the rows, join them, and add cream strips top and bottom so neighbouring trees never touch.

Twelve trees and a red border make a festive Christmas throw.

About this quilt

A tiered Christmas tree with a gold star on top, made from stretched flying geese: just rectangles and squares, no templates. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).

CUT • Snow white: two 12½ × 1½″, four 5½ × 2½″, two 4½ × 2½″, two 3½ × 2½″, two 1½ × 2½″, ten 2½″ squares, four 1½″ squares • Pine green: one 4½ × 2½″, one 8½ × 2½″ • Fir green: one 6½ × 2½″, one 10½ × 2½″ • Gold: one 2½″ square • Brown: one 2½″ square

MAKE • Star: white 1½″ squares on all four corners of the gold, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Tiers: white 2½″ squares on both top corners of each green rectangle, stitch and flip • Rows: white sides on each piece so every row is 12½″ wide: 5½″ beside the star and the trunk, then 4½″, 3½″, 2½″ and 1½″ beside the tiers, top to bottom • Join the rows, pine and fir tiers alternating, then add a 12½ × 1½″ strip top and bottom

TIP: sew a thread's width outside the drawn line on each corner, so the flipped corner reaches the edge and the tiers stay square.

OTHER SIZES: for a 6 × 7″ tree, halve every finished size and add ½″ for seams.

Will yours have a gold star or a red one on top? 🎄
