How it's made

A ring of evergreen and a bright red bow, all from straight seams. Here's a wreath for your Christmas quilts.

Wreaths are woven from evergreens, which stay green right through winter. This one is just squares and strips.

Fir green corners on a frosty square turn the middle into an eight-sided opening.

A frosty corner on a fir green square rounds the outside of the wreath. Make four and turn them.

Small green corners point two red squares in towards a deep red knot. That's the bow.

Add evergreen strips at the top and sides, sew three rows, and the ring closes round the bow.

A narrow frosty frame gives each wreath room to breathe in a quilt.

Twelve wreaths and a red border make a festive throw.

About this quilt

A Christmas wreath with a red bow, pieced from squares and strips with stitch-and-flip corners: no curves, no templates. 12½″ unfinished (12″ finished).

CUT • Frost: one 6½″ square, four 2½″ squares, two 1½ × 10½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • Fir green: eight 2½″ squares • Evergreen: one 6½ × 2½″, two 2½ × 6½″, four 1½″ squares, four 1¼″ squares • Ribbon red: two 2½″ squares • Deep red: one 2½″ square

MAKE • Middle: fir 2½″ squares on all four corners of the frost 6½″, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Corners: a frost 2½″ square on one corner of four fir 2½″ squares, stitch and flip; turn them so the frost sits on the outside • Bow: evergreen 1½″ squares on the two inner corners of each red square, and 1¼″ squares on all four corners of the deep red knot • Rows: corner, 6½ × 2½″ top, corner / side, middle, side / corner, loop, knot, loop, corner • Join the rows (10½″ square), add the 1½ × 10½″ sides, then the 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom

TIP: two greens, a light and a dark, make the ring look leafy rather than flat.

OTHER SIZES: for a 6″ wreath, halve every finished size and add ½″ for seams.

Would you hang yours on the door or on the quilt rack? 🎄
