How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a cheerful corn and beans block for harvest time. It's nothing but triangles and squares.
It's an old Ladies Art Company pattern, named for its yellow and green. In other colours it's called hen and chicks.
Let's start with the triangles. Lay a green and a gold square on cream ones, and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.
Cut them apart, press toward the colour and trim to two and a half inches. You'll want twelve green and twelve gold.
For the first quarter, set a cream corner with the green and gold all pointing in. Then sew three rows of three.
The second quarter is its mirror, except the gold grows into one big triangle. Sew it the same way.
Make two of each quarter and turn the second pair right round. Sew them like a four-patch, and there's your twelve and a half inch block!
Twelve blocks and a green border make a lovely harvest throw.

About this quilt
Corn and beans: a harvest classic from the Ladies Art Company, named for its traditional yellow and green. Also known as Hen and Chicks and Duck and Ducklings. 24 half-square triangles and 12 squares on a 2″ grid, 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Cream: twelve 2⅞″ squares and ten 2½″ squares • Green: six 2⅞″ squares • Gold: six 2⅞″ squares and two 2½″ squares
MAKE • Layer each cream 2⅞″ square on a green or gold one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the colour and trim to 2½″: twelve green and twelve gold half-square triangles • Cream quarter: a cream corner, three green and two gold triangles and three more cream squares, all pointing to the centre. Sew 3 rows of 3: 6½″ • Gold quarter: the mirror image, with a gold square at its inner corner so the gold grows into one big triangle. Sew 3 rows of 3: 6½″ • Make two of each quarter, turn the second pair 180° and sew them like a four-patch
TIP: lay all nine pieces of a quarter out beside the machine and sew one row at a time, so no triangle gets turned the wrong way.
OTHER SIZES: cut the triangle squares ⅞″ over the finished unit and the plain squares ½″ over. For a 9″ block (1½″ units): 2⅜″ and 2″.
Would you keep it yellow and green, or go hen and chicks colours?
