How it's made
A cosy red mitten with a thumb, a snowy stripe and a ribbed cuff. Let's piece it.
Mittens keep your fingers together, so they share their warmth. That's why they beat gloves on the coldest days.
Start with the thumb: two narrow red pieces. Small blue corners round its tip and its base.
Now the hand. Blue squares on the top corners of a red rectangle, trimmed and flipped, round the fingertips.
A white stripe goes across the hand and the thumb at the same height, so it lines up like knitting.
A striped cream cuff goes under the hand, with a little blue where the thumb tucks in.
Frame it in blue, sides first, so a row of mittens never touch.
Nine mittens and a red border make a cosy winter wall hanging.

About this quilt
A cosy red mitten with a thumb, a snowy stripe and a ribbed cuff, pieced from rectangles: the rounding is all stitch-and-flip corners. 12½ × 14½″ unfinished (12 × 14″ finished).
CUT • Red: one 6½ × 5½″, one 6½ × 3½″, one 2½ × 3″, one 2½ × 3½″ • Blue: two 2½″ squares, two 1½″ squares, one 1″ square, one 2½ × 3″, one 1½ × 3½″, two 2½ × 12½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • White: one 6½ × 1½″, one 2½ × 1½″ • Cream stripe: one 7½ × 3½″
MAKE • Thumb: blue 1½″ and 1″ squares on the top corners of the red 2½ × 3″ (the bigger one outside), and a blue 1½″ on the bottom-left corner of the red 2½ × 3½″; stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Hand: blue 2½″ squares on the top corners of the red 6½ × 5½″ • Sew the thumb column: blue 2½ × 3″, thumb tip, white 2½ × 1½″, thumb base. Sew the hand: tip, white 6½ × 1½″, red 6½ × 3½″. Join them side by side • Cuff: blue 1½ × 3½″ beside the cream 7½ × 3½″, sewn under the mitten • Frame: blue 2½ × 12½″ each side, then 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom
TIP: line up the white stripe across the thumb seam with a pin, so it runs straight like knitting.
OTHER SIZES: for an 18 × 21″ mitten, multiply each finished size by 1½ and add ½″: the hand becomes 9½ × 8″.
Make a pair: flip the layout for the other hand. Red, or another colour? 🧤
