How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a classic courthouse steps block, one pair of strips at a time.

It's a log cabin cousin. The strips go on in pairs, on opposite sides, so they climb out like steps.

Start with a three and a half inch red square. Sew cream strips to the top and bottom, then navy strips down both sides.

Round two works the same way with longer strips: pale sky on the top and bottom, teal on the sides.

One more round in cream and navy. Press each seam away from the centre, and look how the steps climb out!

Turn every other block a quarter turn, and the lights and darks weave together like a basket.

Save this one for the strip lengths. Design your own quilt like this at quiltler.com.

About this quilt

Courthouse steps, the log cabin's tidy cousin: strips go on in pairs on opposite sides, so they climb out like steps. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT (all strips 2″ wide) • Red: one 3½″ square • Cream: two 3½″ and two 9½″ strips • Pale sky: two 6½″ strips • Navy: two 6½″ and two 12½″ strips • Teal: two 9½″ strips

MAKE • Sew cream 3½″ strips to the top and bottom of the red square, then navy 6½″ strips to the sides (6½″) • Round two: sky 6½″ top and bottom, teal 9½″ sides (9½″) • Round three: cream 9½″ top and bottom, navy 12½″ sides (12½″)

TIP: press every seam away from the centre, and square up after each round so the steps stay straight.

OTHER SIZES: each round adds 3″. Stop after round two for a 9½″ unfinished block.

TIP 2: turn every other block a quarter turn for a woven, basket-like quilt.

Would you go traditional red and navy, or bright and scrappy?
