How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a disappearing four patch, an easy block that looks much harder than it is.

It's a modern twist on an old favourite: sew a simple four patch, slice it up and turn a few pieces.

Sew four five inch squares into a four patch, with the darks on opposite corners. It measures nine and a half inches.

Now the fun part: cut one and a half inches either side of the centre seam, then turn the block and cut again.

Now turn the four middle side pieces all the way round. See how the colours start to swap places?

Sew the pieces back into three rows and join them. The four patch has disappeared into a playful checkerboard!

Twenty blocks and a slate teal border make a sweet throw, and the checkerboard runs right across the quilt.

About this quilt

The disappearing four patch: sew a four patch, slice it, turn four pieces and sew it back into a playful checkerboard. 8″ finished (8½″ unfinished).

CUT • One 5″ square each of navy, cream, butter yellow and berry

MAKE • Sew a four patch with the darks (navy and berry) on opposite corners: 9½″ • Cut 1½″ to each side of the vertical centre seam, then 1½″ to each side of the horizontal one: 9 pieces • Turn the four middle side pieces 180° • Sew three rows of three and join them: 8½″

QUILT: 20 blocks in 5 rows of 4, all the same way up, and a 3″ finished slate teal border (cut 3½″): 38 × 46″.

TIP: press the four patch seams open, or spin them, so the cuts stay flat and straight.

OTHER SIZES: start with 10″ squares (a layer cake) and cut 3″ from each seam for an 18½″ block (it always comes out 1″ smaller than the four patch).

How far from the seam would you cut?
