How it's made

Sew nine squares, cut them right back up, and watch the nine-patch disappear into something new.

The nine-patch is one of the oldest blocks there is. The disappearing version is a modern twist: make it, then cut it up.

Cut nine five inch squares: four plum for the corners, four blush for the sides and one gold for the middle.

Sew three rows of three with quarter inch seams and join the rows. It measures fourteen inches.

Now the brave part: cut straight through the middle both ways, for four seven inch squares.

Turn the top right and bottom left squares all the way round, so the big plum corners meet in the middle.

Sew the four squares back together. The nine-patch has disappeared, and the block measures thirteen and a half inches.

Make sixteen, turn every other one and add a plum border. It looks far harder than it is.

About this quilt

The disappearing nine-patch: sew a nine-patch, cut it into four and turn two of them. Two cuts, two turns, and the block looks nothing like where it started. 13″ finished (13½″ unfinished).

CUT • Four plum, four blush and one gold 5″ square

MAKE • Lay them out plum in the corners, blush on the sides, gold in the middle • Sew three rows of three with ¼″ seams, then join the rows: 14″ • Cut through the middle both ways: four 7″ squares • Turn the top right and bottom left squares 180° • Sew the four back together: 13½″ unfinished

TIP: charm squares are 5″, so one charm pack makes about four blocks.

OTHER SIZES: the block comes out 3 × square − 1½″. Ten-inch layer cake squares make a 28½″ block.
