How it's made
Hi there! Let's get started on a peaceful little dove block today.
In Genesis, Noah's dove brought back an olive leaf, a sign the waters were going down. It's stood for peace ever since.
First, the wings: a sky corner on each white rectangle sweeps it up into a wing.
For the head, sew a tiny charcoal eye into white strips, then round three corners with sky squares.
Two sky corners point a little gold beak. Sew it between a sky square and a green stem.
Sky squares on opposite corners turn green squares into olive leaves.
A big sky corner slopes the breast, and two more point the tail.
Now sew the beak, head and wings into the top half.
Then sew the leaves, body and tail, and join it all with sky. Isn't she lovely?
Nine doves make a gentle quilt for a christening or a quiet corner.

MAKE • Wings: sew a sky 4″ square to the top-left corner of the white 4 × 5½″, and a sky 2½″ square to the 2½ × 5½″; trim and press • Head: sew white 2 × 1″, the charcoal eye and white 1½ × 1″ in a row; add the white 3½ × 1½″ above and 3½ × 2″ below; round three corners with sky 1½″ squares • Beak: sky 1″ squares on the two left corners of the gold square; sew between a sky 1½″ and the olive 1½″ stem • Leaves: sky 1½″ squares on two opposite corners of the olive 2½″, and sky 1¼″ squares on the other two corners of the olive 2″ • Body: a sky 3½″ square on the bottom-left of the white 6½ × 3½″; tail: sky 2″ squares on both right corners of the white 2 × 3½″ • Top half: sky 2 × 3½″, beak column, head; sky 6 × 2½″ above; then the two wings and sky 1½ × 5½″ • Bottom half: each leaf with its sky piece below, body, tail, sky 1½ × 3½″; join the halves between the sky 12½ × 2½″ strips
TIP: piece the eye into the head before you round its corners, so the head stays one smooth shape.
