How it's made

Hi there! Let's get started on a classic Dutchman's puzzle, with eight geese all in a spin.

It's a much-loved traditional block. The geese are sewn in pairs, and each pair turns a quarter round the middle.

First, sew cream squares onto the top corners of a navy and a red rectangle, then trim and flip them back.

Now sew the navy goose on top of the red, both pointing up, stitching just above the point so it stays sharp.

Make four pairs, then turn each one a quarter more than the last. See how the red geese chase round the centre?

Sew two rows of two and join them. Your block measures twelve and a half inches.

Look at that! Twelve blocks side by side, and the whole quilt is spinning.

About this quilt

The Dutchman's puzzle: eight flying geese sewn in pairs, each pair turned a quarter so the geese spin like a pinwheel. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Navy: four 6½ × 3½″ rectangles • Red: four 6½ × 3½″ rectangles • Cream: sixteen 3½″ squares

MAKE • Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of each cream square • Lay one on a top corner of a rectangle, sew on the line, trim ¼″ past it and press out; repeat on the other top corner • Sew a navy goose on top of a red goose, both pointing up: a 6½″ pair. Make four • Lay the pairs out two by two, turning each a quarter turn more than the last, so the red geese meet in the middle • Sew two rows of two and join them

TIP: sew with the goose on top so you can see the point, and stitch just above it so it stays sharp.

OTHER SIZES: the geese are a quarter of the block wide and an eighth tall. For an 8″ block, cut 4½ × 2½″ rectangles and 2½″ squares.

Which colours would you spin your geese in?
