How it's made

One rectangle, two squares and two seams. Here's how to make flying geese with perfect points.

It's named for geese flying in a V. Each goose is twice as wide as it is tall, and pointing them one way gives a quilt movement.

Cut a rust rectangle four and a half by two and a half inches, and two sky squares two and a half inches.

Lay a square on each top corner, sew corner to corner, trim a quarter inch past the line and press out. The rust becomes a point.

Make a gold one the same way, then a second of each, so you have four geese.

Sew them in a column, every point facing up. Sew just above the point so it stays sharp.

Stack the columns and the whole flock flies up the quilt.

About this quilt

Flying geese with sharp points, the stitch-and-flip way: no triangles to cut and no bias edges. Each goose is 4 × 2″ finished (4½ × 2½″ unfinished).

CUT (for four geese) • Two rust and two gold 4½ × 2½″ rectangles • Eight sky 2½″ squares

MAKE • Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of each sky square • Lay one on a top corner of a rectangle, sew on the line, trim ¼″ past it and press out • Repeat on the other top corner: the rectangle now has a point • Sew the four geese into a column, points up, stitching just above each point so it stays sharp

OTHER SIZES: a goose is always twice as wide as tall. Cut the rectangle (finished width + ½″) × (finished height + ½″) and the squares the rectangle's height.

TIP: sew a second line ½″ outside the first before trimming and you get a bonus half-square triangle from every corner.

Which way should your flock fly?
