How it's made
An iced roof, an arched door and a peppermint eave, all from squares and rectangles.
Gingerbread houses are a German Christmas tradition, often linked to the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel.
White corners point the roof. Smaller green corners on top leave a stripe of icing along each edge.
Red and white squares, with a narrow red piece at each end, make a peppermint eave. Sew it under the roof.
Little gingerbread corners round the top of a red door, two squares tall.
Each white window sits on a gingerbread square. Sew them in a row with the door, and a strip across the top.
Add green down the sides and across the top and bottom, so each house has room in a quilt.
Nine make a whole gingerbread village.

About this quilt
A gingerbread house with an iced roof, a peppermint eave and an arched candy door, pieced from squares and rectangles: no curves, no templates. 14½″ unfinished (14″ finished).
CUT • Gingerbread: one 12½ × 6½″, two 2½″ squares, two 1¼″ squares, four 1½ × 4½″, one 10½ × 1½″ • White: two 6½″ squares, six 1½″ squares, two 2½″ squares • Red: five 1½″ squares, two 1 × 1½″, two 2½″ squares • Pine green: two 5½″ squares, two 2½ × 5½″, two 1½ × 7½″, two 14½ × 1½″
MAKE • Roof: white 6½″ squares on the top corners of the gingerbread 12½ × 6½″, sewn corner to corner, trimmed and pressed: a point. Then green 5½″ squares on the same corners the same way, which leaves a stripe of white icing down each side • Trim: red 1 × 1½″, then white and red 1½″ squares in turn (white at both ends), then red 1 × 1½″; sew it under the roof • Door: gingerbread 1¼″ corners on the top of a red 2½″ square, with a red 2½″ square below • Windows: a white 2½″ square on a gingerbread 2½″ square; make two • Wall: gingerbread strip, window, strip, door, strip, window, strip, with the 10½ × 1½″ strip across the top • Green 2½ × 5½″ each side of the wall and 1½ × 7½″ each side of the roof; join, then add the 14½ × 1½″ strips top and bottom
TIP: sew the green corners exactly corner to corner and the icing stripe comes out an even ¾″ or so. Cut them smaller for a wider stripe.
OTHER SIZES: the roof is a flying goose, twice as wide as it is tall, with corner squares as tall as it is.
