How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a cheerful granny square block, with every seam nice and straight.

It's named after the crocheted granny square: rings of colour round a centre, here thirteen little squares on point.

Start in the middle. Sew a coral square onto each corner of a mustard square, corner to corner, then trim and flip them back.

Next, four side units: coral on the two corners that will face the centre, and cream on the outer two.

The four corner units are nearly all cream, with just one coral corner pointing in towards the middle.

Now turn them so every coral corner points to the centre. See the granny square appear?

Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams, then join the rows. It measures twelve and a half inches.

A slim cream frame gives each granny square room to breathe in the quilt. Sides first, then the top and bottom.

Twelve framed blocks make a happy lap quilt, each granny square floating on cream.

About this quilt

A cheerful granny square quilt block, rings of colour just like the crocheted kind, made from nine square-in-a-square units so every seam is straight, in a slim cream frame. 14″ finished (14½″ unfinished).

CUT • Mustard: one 4½″ square • Teal: eight 4½″ squares • Coral: twelve 2½″ squares • Cream: twenty 2½″ squares, two 1½″ × 12½″ and two 1½″ × 14½″ strips

MAKE • Centre: sew a coral 2½″ square on each corner of the mustard square, corner to corner, trim ¼″ past the line and press out • 4 side units: teal 4½″ with coral on two neighbouring corners and cream on the other two • 4 corner units: teal 4½″ with one coral corner and three cream • Turn the units so every coral corner points to the centre, then sew three rows of three (12½″) • Frame it: cream 12½″ strips on the sides, 14½″ strips top and bottom (14½″)

TIP: draw a pencil line corner to corner on each 2½″ square and stitch just a thread outside it, so your units stay 4½″.

OTHER SIZES: corner squares are half the unit's cut size plus ¼″. 3½″ units with 2″ corners make a 9½″ granny square.

What colours would your granny square be?
