How it's made

Hi there! Let's sew a simple, timeless Greek Cross block together today.

The Greek cross, with four equal arms, is one of the oldest crosses Christians have used. As a block, it's a cousin of the churn dash.

Let's start with the corners. Lay a cream square on a terracotta one and sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal.

Cut on the line, press toward the terracotta and trim to four and a half inches. A second pair gives you all four corners.

Now for the arms of the cross. Sew a blue strip to a cream one, then cut it every four and a half inches.

Add a blue centre square. Turn the arms so the blue faces the middle, and the corners so the terracotta sits outside.

Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams as you go, and watch the cross stand right out.

Side by side, the corners meet in little terracotta diamonds between the crosses.

About this quilt

The Greek Cross: four arms the same length, one of the oldest crosses Christians have used, pieced as a simple nine-patch of half-square triangles, strip-pieced arms and a centre square. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Blue: one 2½ × 19″ strip and one 4½″ square • Cream: one 2½ × 19″ strip and two 4⅞″ squares • Terracotta: two 4⅞″ squares

MAKE • Layer each cream 4⅞″ square on a terracotta one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the terracotta and trim the four corners to 4½″ • Sew the blue and cream strips together along the long edge, press toward the blue • Cut the strip set every 4½″ for four arms • Lay out the corners with the terracotta outside, the arms with the blue toward the middle, and the blue centre • Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams

TIP: keep the blue toward the centre on every arm, or the cross loses a limb.

OTHER SIZES: for a 9″ block, cut the corner squares 3⅞″, the strips 2 × 15″ and the centre 3½″.

What colours would you choose for your cross?
