How it's made
Two squares, four seams and one cut. Here's the fastest way to make eight half-square triangles.
Half-square triangles are in stars, pinwheels, bear paws and so much more. Sewing before you cut keeps the stretchy bias edges in line.
Cut two seven and three quarter inch squares. Draw both diagonals on the light one and lay it on the dark, right sides together.
Sew a quarter inch either side of both lines. Four lines of stitching, and you're done at the machine.
Cut across the middle both ways, then along both drawn lines. That's eight pieces.
Press each one open toward the dark, then trim them all to three and a half inches.
Lay them out in two rows so the teal makes a zigzag, and sew. Eight triangles, one strip.
Stack twelve strips and the zigzags run right across a quilt.

About this quilt
Eight half-square triangles from two squares: the fastest way to make the unit inside stars, pinwheels, bear paws and so many more blocks. Makes eight 3½″ HSTs (3″ finished).
CUT • One 7¾″ square of a light and one of a dark
MAKE • Draw both diagonals on the wrong side of the light square • Layer it on the dark, right sides together • Sew ¼″ either side of both lines • Cut across the middle both ways, then along both drawn lines • Press open toward the dark and trim each to 3½″
OTHER SIZES: cut the two squares 2 × (finished size + ⅞″). For 2″ finished HSTs that's 5¾″; for 4″ it's 9¾″. Cut them ½″ bigger if you like to trim to size.
TIP: sewing before cutting keeps the stretchy bias edges stable.
