How it's made
Four triangles, one strip set and a square of mustard. Here's the churn dash in warm harvest colours.
It's named for the dasher of an old butter churn, and it's also known as hole in the barn door. Underneath, it's a simple nine-patch.
Layer a cream and a rust four and seven eighths inch square and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.
Cut on the line, press toward the rust and trim to four and a half inches. Make a second pair, for four corners.
Sew a rust strip to a cream one along the long edge. One strip set makes all four dashes.
Cut it every four and a half inches. Four square dashes, half rust and half cream.
Add a mustard centre. Turn the corners so the rust points in, and the dashes so the rust faces out.
Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams. Your churn dash measures twelve and a half inches.
Twelve blocks and a rust border make a cosy harvest throw.

About this quilt
The churn dash, named for the dasher of a butter churn: a nine-patch of half-square triangles, strip-pieced dashes and a centre square. Burnt rust, oat cream and mustard for the end of harvest. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Rust: two 4⅞″ squares and one 2½ × 18″ strip • Cream: two 4⅞″ squares and one 2½ × 18″ strip • Mustard: one 4½″ square
MAKE • Layer each cream 4⅞″ square on a rust one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the rust and trim the four half-square triangles to 4½″ • Sew the rust and cream strips together along the long edge, press toward the rust • Cut the strip set every 4½″: four dash units • Lay out the corners with the rust pointing in, the dashes with the rust to the outside, and the mustard centre • Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams
TIP: press the row seams in opposite directions so the corners lock together.
