How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a crisp, classic hourglass block together. Two squares give you two blocks.

The hourglass is a patchwork staple. Each triangle is a quarter of a square, so you'll hear it called a quarter-square triangle.

Start by layering a cream square on a teal one, and sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal.

Cut on the line, press toward the teal, and snip off the dog ears.

Here's the trick: lay one on the other with teal facing cream, so the seams nest. Then sew either side of the other diagonal.

Cut, press, and trim to eight and a half inches.

Two hourglasses from two squares! Set lots side by side, all the same way, and diamonds appear where they meet.

Save this for the next time you need sharp points. Design your own quilt like this at quiltler.com.

About this quilt

The hourglass block: four triangles meeting in the middle, also called a quarter-square triangle. Two squares make two blocks, 8″ finished (8½″ unfinished).

CUT (two blocks) • Cream: one 9¼″ square • Teal: one 9¼″ square

MAKE • Layer the cream square on the teal and sew ¼″ either side of one diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the teal and trim off the dog ears: two half-square triangles • Lay one on the other, teal facing cream, with the seams nested • Sew ¼″ either side of the other diagonal, cut on the line and press • Trim both to 8½″: two hourglass blocks

TIP: cut the squares at 9½″ if you like to trim to a perfect 8½″ with the ruler's diagonal on the seam.

OTHER SIZES: cut the squares 1¼″ bigger than the finished block. For a 6″ hourglass, cut 7¼″; for 4″, cut 5¼″.

Where would you use your hourglasses: a whole quilt, or star points?
