How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a simple, meaningful Ichthys fish block together today.
Early Christians used the fish as a sign of faith. The Greek letters of ichthys stand for Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour.
The whole outline comes from one little unit. Sew aqua squares onto two opposite corners of a navy square, one at a time, and a navy line runs corner to corner. Make six.
Turn three of them a quarter turn. Four of them sew together into an X, where the lines cross to make the tail.
The last two make the nose. Then sew a navy strip to the top and bottom of an aqua rectangle for the middle of the body.
Sew the nose, body and tail in a row, then add aqua all around. And there's the fish!
Twelve make a whole school of fish, all swimming the same way.

About this quilt
The Ichthys, the fish early Christians used as a sign of their faith: in Greek, the letters of ichthys (fish) stand for Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour. Its whole outline comes from one simple stitch-and-flip unit. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Navy: six 3½″ squares and two 2 × 1″ strips • Aqua: twelve 3″ squares, one 2 × 5½″, two 1¼ × 6½″ and two 12½ × 3½″
MAKE • Sew aqua 3″ squares onto two opposite corners of each navy square, one corner at a time, trim ¼″ past the seams and press: a thin navy line runs corner to corner • Turn three of the six a quarter turn • Sew four into a 2 × 2 X for the crossed tail (6½″) • Sew the other two one above the other for the nose • Sew a navy 2 × 1″ strip to the top and bottom of the aqua 2 × 5½″ for the body • Sew nose, body and tail in a row, add the aqua sides, then the top and bottom
TIP: line up the navy lines where the units meet before you pin, so the outline runs unbroken.
