How it's made

Hi there! Let's get started on a classic Jacob's Ladder block today.

It's named for Jacob's dream in Genesis, of a ladder reaching up to heaven. In fabric, it's simply four-patches and triangles.

First, sew a navy and a cream strip together and press toward the navy. This one strip set makes every four-patch.

Cut it every two and a half inches, turn every other piece around, and sew them in pairs. You'll need five.

Now for the triangles: lay a cream square on a gold one and sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal.

Cut on the line, press toward the gold and trim to four and a half inches. Make four.

Lay them out so the navy squares climb from corner to corner, then sew three rows of three. There's your ladder!

Turn every other block, and the ladders cross into a lattice over the whole quilt.

About this quilt

Jacob's Ladder, named for Jacob's dream in Genesis of a ladder reaching up to heaven: five four-patches and four half-square triangles, with the navy squares climbing corner to corner. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Navy: one 2½ × 26″ strip • Cream: one 2½ × 26″ strip and two 4⅞″ squares • Gold: two 4⅞″ squares

MAKE • Sew the navy and cream strips together along the long edge, press toward the navy • Cut the strip set every 2½″ for ten pieces • Turn every other piece around and sew them in pairs: five four-patches, 4½″ • Layer each cream 4⅞″ square on a gold one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the gold and trim the four triangles to 4½″ • Lay out three rows of three, with the navy squares running corner to corner and the gold pointing to the other two corners, then sew the rows

TIP: press the four-patch seams toward the navy so they nest when you join the rows.
