How it's made

Gold rays, pink streaks and flying sparks. Here's a firework for midnight.

Fireworks light up skies all over the world as the new year begins. This one is all squares.

Navy corners on gold squares. Big ones leave a diamond spark, tiny ones round off the centre.

A gold strip between navy, with small navy corners for a sharp tip. Make four and lay them round the centre.

Big navy corners on opposite sides leave a pink streak. Sew it with the spark and two navy squares.

Make four, and turn each a quarter more than the last so a spark flies to every corner.

Sew three rows of three, nesting the seams so every ray meets the centre.

Navy strips all round give every firework its own patch of sky.

Twelve bursts and a gold border: a whole sky of fireworks.

About this quilt

A firework bursting over the night sky to ring in the new year: gold rays, pink streaks and flying sparks, all from squares, strips and stitch-and-flip corners. 12½″ unfinished (12″ finished).

CUT • Gold: five 2½″ squares, four 1½ × 4½″ • Pink: four 2½″ squares • Navy: eight 2½″ squares, eight 2″ squares, twenty-four 1½″ squares, four 1″ squares, eight 1 × 4½″, two 1½ × 10½″, two 12½ × 1½″

MAKE • Sparks: stitch-and-flip navy 1½″ squares on all four corners of four gold 2½″ squares • Centre: navy 1″ squares on all four corners of the last gold 2½″ • Gold rays: navy 1 × 4½″, gold 1½ × 4½″, navy 1 × 4½″; navy 1½″ squares on the two top corners for the point; make four • Pink rays: navy 2″ squares on opposite corners of each pink 2½″, one at a time • Corners: spark and navy 2½″ over navy 2½″ and pink ray, so the streak points at the spark; make four • Lay out three rows of three with the gold rays pointing out and the sparks in the corners; sew • Add navy 1½ × 10½″ sides, then 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom

TIP: sew the two big navy corners on each pink square one at a time, trimming and pressing the first before the second, so they don't fight each other.

OTHER SIZES: double every finished measurement for a 24″ burst, then add ½″ to each for the cut size.

How are you ringing in the new year? 🎆
