How it's made
Hi there! Let's ring in the new year with a shining gold star on a midnight sky.
This is the variable star, also known as the Ohio star. It's a simple nine-patch, and all eight points come from hourglasses.
First, layer midnight on gold and sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal. Cut, press and snip the dog ears.
Now lay one on the other, gold facing midnight, and sew the other diagonal. Cut, press and trim to four and a half inches.
Make a second pair, add midnight corners and a champagne centre, and sew three rows of three.
Look at that sparkle! Sixteen make a whole sky of stars for the year ahead.

About this quilt
A New Year's star in gold on midnight: the variable star, also called the Ohio star, a nine-patch with eight points made from hourglass units. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Gold: two 5¼″ squares • Midnight: two 5¼″ squares and four 4½″ squares • Champagne: one 4½″ square
MAKE • Layer each midnight 5¼″ square on a gold one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the gold and trim off the dog ears: four half-square triangles • Pair them gold facing midnight with the seams nested, and sew ¼″ either side of the other diagonal • Cut, press and trim to 4½″: four hourglasses • Lay out midnight corners, the hourglasses with their gold points reaching out, and the champagne centre; sew three rows of three
TIP: a speckled or metallic-print midnight makes the background look like a starry sky.
OTHER SIZES: cut the hourglass squares 1¼″ over the finished unit, and the plain squares ½″ over. For a 9″ star: 4¼″ and 3½″.
