How it's made
Eight sharp points from just two squares of blue. Here's the Ohio star, step by step.
The Ohio star, also called the variable star, is a nine-patch with eight points. The points come from hourglass units.
Layer a cream and a blue five and a quarter inch square and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.
Cut on the diagonal, press toward the blue and snip off the dog ears.
Lay one on the other with blue facing cream and the seams nested, then sew either side of the other diagonal.
Cut on the line, press, and trim to four and a half inches. Two hourglasses, the points meeting in the middle.
Make a second pair for four hourglasses. Add four cream corners and a coral centre, all four and a half inches.
Sew three rows of three, with the blue points reaching for the corners. Your star measures twelve and a half inches.
Sixteen stars and a blue border make a classic lap quilt.

About this quilt
The Ohio star, also called the variable star: a nine-patch with eight points, all from hourglass (quarter-square triangle) units. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Blue: two 5¼″ squares • Cream: two 5¼″ squares and four 4½″ squares • Coral: one 4½″ square
MAKE • Layer each cream 5¼″ square on a blue one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line and press toward the blue: four half-square triangles • Pair them blue facing cream with the seams nested, and sew ¼″ either side of the other diagonal • Cut, press and trim to 4½″: four hourglasses • Lay out cream corners, hourglasses on the sides and the coral centre; sew three rows of three
OTHER SIZES: cut the hourglass squares 1¼″ over the finished unit, and the plain squares ½″ over. For a 9″ star: 4¼″ and 3½″.
