How it's made
Eight swirling spokes and a twisted wrapper, all from straight seams.
A pinwheel's sweet cousin: twelve triangles make eight spokes instead of four, and snowball corners round it off.
Layer white on red and sew a quarter inch each side of both diagonals. Four cuts make eight triangles.
Press, trim to two and a half inches, and sew two small pairs the same way for twelve.
Sew a red square and three triangles into a quarter, the red spokes reaching for one corner.
Make four, each turned a quarter more, like a pinwheel. Eight red spokes swirl from the centre.
Snowball green corners on, and the square turns round.
Green corners point an icy rectangle into a wrapper twist. Make two, with a green square above and below each.
Sew on the twists, then frame it in green so neighbouring candies never touch.
Twelve candies and a red border make a sweet Christmas lap quilt.

About this quilt
A wrapped peppermint candy for Christmas: an eight-spoke pinwheel, rounded with snowball corners, with a twist of wrapper each side. All straight seams. 14½ × 10½″ unfinished (14 × 10″ finished).
CUT • Red: one 5¾″ square, two 2⅞″ squares, four 2½″ squares • White: one 5¾″ square, two 2⅞″ squares • Pine green: twelve 2½″ squares, two 1½ × 8½″, two 14½ × 1½″ • Icy blue: two 2½ × 4½″
MAKE • Eight at once: layer the white 5¾″ square on the red, sew ¼″ each side of both diagonals, cut through the middle both ways and on both diagonals • Two more pairs: layer each white 2⅞″ on a red, sew ¼″ each side of the diagonal and cut • Press toward the red and trim all twelve triangles to 2½″ • Quarter: a red 2½″ square and three triangles, red spokes reaching for one corner; make four • Turn each quarter a quarter more than the last and sew two rows of two: an 8½″ candy • Round it: green 2½″ squares on all four corners, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Twists: green 2½″ squares on two corners of each icy 2½ × 4½″ so they point at the candy; a green 2½″ above and below • Sew a twist each side of the candy, then the 1½ × 8½″ sides and the 14½ × 1½″ top and bottom
TIP: press the last centre seam open to spread the bulk where the eight points meet.
OTHER SIZES: for a 12″ candy, cut the big squares 7¾″ and the pairs 3⅞″, trim to 3½″, cut the red and green squares 3½″ and the twists 3½ × 6½″.
