How it's made

Two squares, one seam and a few quarter turns. Here's the easiest pinwheel you'll ever sew.

The pinwheel is a favourite for baby quilts, and it's just four half-square triangles, each turned a quarter more than the last.

Layer a yellow and a navy three and seven eighths inch square, right sides together, and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.

Cut on the diagonal, press toward the navy and trim both to three and a half inches.

Make a second pair the same way. Then turn each triangle a quarter more than the last, so the navy chases round.

Sew them in two rows, nesting the centre seams so the points meet. Your pinwheel measures six and a half inches.

Sew twenty side by side and the corners spin up a second set of pinwheels in between.

About this quilt

The pinwheel: four half-square triangles, each turned a quarter more than the last. One of the most searched quilt blocks, and the quickest. 6″ finished (6½″ unfinished).

CUT • Two 3⅞″ squares of yellow and two of navy

MAKE • Layer each yellow square on a navy one, right sides together • Sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal, cut on the line, press toward the navy • Trim the four half-square triangles to 3½″ • Lay them out so each is turned a quarter more than the last, the navy chasing round • Sew two rows of two, nesting the centre seams

TIP: press the last seam open to spread the bulk where all eight points meet.

OTHER SIZES: cut the squares ⅞″ over the finished triangle. 4⅞″ squares make an 8½″ unfinished pinwheel.
