How it's made

Red petals, green leaves and a golden heart, all from straight seams. Here's a poinsettia for your Christmas quilts.

A poinsettia's red petals are really leaves called bracts. The true flowers are the tiny yellow buds in the middle.

Small cream corners on all four corners of a red rectangle make a petal pointed at both ends. Make four.

Green corners on opposite sides of a red square give a slanting bract with leaves peeking out. Make four and turn two.

Lay the bracts in the corners, the petals between them and a gold square in the middle, then sew three rows.

A narrow cream frame keeps each flower apart when you sew them into a quilt.

Twelve poinsettias and a green border make a cheerful Christmas throw.

About this quilt

A Christmas poinsettia with eight pointed red bracts, green leaves peeking between them and a gold centre, all from stitch-and-flip corners: no curves, no templates. 12½″ unfinished (12″ finished).

CUT • Poinsettia red: four 2½ × 4½″, four 4½″ squares • Holly green: eight 3″ squares • Gold: one 2½″ square • Cream: sixteen 1½″ squares, two 1½ × 10½″, two 12½ × 1½″

MAKE • Petals: cream 1½″ squares on all four corners of each red 2½ × 4½″, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Bracts: green 3″ squares on two opposite corners of each red 4½″ square, stitch and flip; turn two of them a quarter turn so all four lean out to the corners • Rows: bract, petal, bract / petal (turned sideways), gold centre, petal / bract, petal, bract • Join the rows (10½″ square), add the 1½ × 10½″ sides, then the 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom

TIP: before sewing, lay all nine pieces out and check that every bract points out to a corner of the block.

OTHER SIZES: for a 6″ poinsettia, halve every finished size and add ½″ for seams.

Red, white or pink: which poinsettia is your favourite? ❤️
