How it's made
A cosy knit beanie with a folded cuff, a stripe and a fluffy pom-pom. Let's piece it.
Call it a beanie, a toque in Canada or a bobble hat in Britain. The bobble on top is a pom-pom.
Sew plum squares on all four corners of a cream square, trim and flip. Now it's a round, fluffy pom-pom.
Big plum corners on a mustard rectangle round the top of the hat, leaving a flat spot for the pom-pom.
A cream stripe and a mustard strip finish the body of the hat.
The ribbed cuff is an inch wider each side, so it looks folded up. Tiny corners soften its ends.
Plum rectangles each side bring every row to twelve and a half inches, so neighbouring hats never touch.
Join the rows with a plum strip above and below. Warm enough for the coldest days!
Twelve hats and a mustard border make a cosy winter throw.

About this quilt
A cosy knit bobble hat with a folded ribbed cuff, a cream stripe and a fluffy pom-pom, pieced from squares and rectangles with stitch-and-flip corners. 12½″ square unfinished (12″ finished).
CUT • Plum: two 3″ squares, four 1½″ squares, four 1″ squares, two 5 × 3½″, two 2½ × 5½″, two 1½ × 2½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • Mustard: one 8½ × 3″, one 8½ × 2″ • Cream: one 3½″ square, one 8½ × 1½″ • Mustard rib (a stripe print, cut so the stripes run up and down): one 10½ × 2½″
MAKE • Pom-pom: plum 1½″ squares on all four corners of the cream 3½″, stitch corner to corner, trim and flip • Crown: plum 3″ squares on the top corners of the mustard 8½ × 3″ • Body: crown, cream 8½ × 1½″, mustard 8½ × 2″ • Cuff: plum 1″ squares on all four corners of the ribbed 10½ × 2½″; it is 1″ wider than the hat each side, so it looks folded up • Frame each row with plum: 5 × 3½″ by the pom-pom, 2½ × 5½″ by the body, 1½ × 2½″ by the cuff • Join the rows with a plum 12½ × 1½″ strip on top and bottom
TIP: a ticking stripe or a narrow corduroy-look print makes a convincing knitted rib.
OTHER SIZES: for an 18″ hat, multiply each finished size by 1½ and add ½″: the crown becomes 12½ × 4¼″ with 4¼″ corners.
