How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a happy, scrappy postage stamp quilt from all those little leftovers.

Postage stamp quilts are named for their tiny squares, and they've always been a thrifty way to use up every last scrap.

Cut thirty six two and a half inch squares and lay them out six by six, with no fabric touching its twin.

Sew each row together, pressing the seams in opposite directions row to row, so they nest when you join the rows.

Make twenty blocks and lay them out five rows of four. The edges are planned too, so no fabric meets itself between blocks.

Join the rows and finish with a navy border, cut three and a half inches wide. Isn't it cheerful?

About this quilt

A happy, scrappy postage stamp quilt: 720 little squares from your scrap basket, sewn into 20 easy blocks. 54 × 66″ finished.

CUT • 720 squares, 2½″, from as many scraps as you like (36 a block) • Navy: 3½″ strips for the border

MAKE • Lay out 36 squares in 6 rows of 6, so no two of one fabric touch • Sew each row with ¼″ seams, pressing the rows in opposite directions • Join the rows: a 12½″ block (12″ finished) • Make 20 blocks and set them in 5 rows of 4 • Add a 3″ finished navy border; a dark solid keeps the edge squares crisp

TIP: plan the edges too: if the left column never matches the right one, and the top row never matches the bottom, no fabric meets itself between blocks.

TIP: chain-piece the squares in pairs first; it goes twice as fast.

OTHER SIZES: 1½″ squares make true postage-stamp 1″ squares and a 6½″ block from the same 6 × 6 layout.

What's the smallest scrap you've ever saved?
