Primary Nine Lattice

Primary Nine Lattice is twelve Double Nine Patch blocks, each fifteen inches, set three by four with two-and-a-half-inch Buttercup sashing so the yellow sits as a loud grid, not a pale spacer. The top finishes at 60 by 77½ inches. Six blocks use Barn Red on Buttermilk and six use Cornflower on Buttermilk, placed in a checkerboard so each row runs red, blue, red or the reverse. The Double Nine Patch is a nine-patch of units: five-spot nine-patches occupy the four corners and the centre, cream filling the four side positions of each little nine-patch, and four plain five-inch buttermilk squares fill the remaining units. Strip-piece those five-spot units from two-and-one-eighth-inch squares, sew the nine units together like any nine-patch, and press toward the dark. Two inches of buttermilk sit inside a three-inch ink-black outer border. Aimed at a confident beginner who likes squares and a bright folk throw, and who can swap the red and the blue without rewriting the cutting.
