How it's made

Hi there! Let's make a quick and charming puss in the corner block together.

It's named for an old children's game with a player in every corner. Underneath, it's an uneven nine-patch.

Here's a quick way to do the top and bottom rows. Sew a cream strip between two plum strips.

Cut it in half across, three and a half inches each, and you've got your top and bottom rows in one go.

For the middle, sew cream bars to both sides of a coral square. That pretty floral is your puss in the middle.

Now join the three rows, nesting the seams. Your block measures twelve and a half inches.

Side by side, the plum corners meet in big squares, like a cheerful checkerboard.

About this quilt

Puss in the corner: an uneven nine-patch named for an old children's game, with a big centre, four bars and four little corner squares. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Plum: two 3½ × 7″ strips • Cream: one 6½ × 7″ strip and two 3½ × 6½″ rectangles • Coral: one 6½″ square

MAKE • Sew the cream strip between the plum strips along their 7″ edges, press toward the plum • Cut across it at 3½″: the top and bottom rows • Sew a cream rectangle to each side of the coral square, press toward the coral • Join the three rows, nesting the seams

TIP: for a whole quilt, sew long strips (3½″, 6½″, 3½″) and cut a row every 3½″, so every block's corners line up.

OTHER SIZES: the corners are a quarter of the block and the centre half. For a 9″ block, cut 2¾″ and 5″ pieces.

What would you put in the middle of yours?
