How it's made

Red stars and green snowballs, side by side. Watch the octagons appear between them.

Two easy blocks take turns. The star's points are stitch and flip, and the snowball's cream corners frame each star.

Stitch red squares on two corners of a cream rectangle, trim and flip. Make four, and turn them so the points face out.

Add four cream corners and a red centre, and sew three rows of three. The star measures eight and a half inches.

Snowball cream corners onto a green square the same size. Those corners turn it into an octagon.

Make two of each and sew them like a checkerboard. The cream corners meet and frame every star.

Sew nine of these in three rows of three, then add a three-inch red border, sides first.

Eighteen red stars, and green octagons twinkling between them. A cosy lap quilt for the season.

About this quilt

A red and green Christmas star quilt: red stars with stitch-and-flip points, alternating with green snowball blocks so octagons twinkle between them. 54″ square finished.

CUT (whole quilt) • Snow cream: seventy-two 4½ × 2½″, one hundred forty-four 2½″ squares • Berry red: one hundred forty-four 2½″ squares, eighteen 4½″ squares; border: two 3½ × 48½″, two 3½ × 54½″ • Evergreen: eighteen 8½″ squares

MAKE (one star) • Points: red 2½″ squares on the two bottom corners of a cream 4½ × 2½″; stitch corner to corner, trim ¼″ past the line and press out. Make four • Lay the four around a red 4½″ centre with the points facing out, and a cream 2½″ square in each corner • Sew three rows of three: an 8½″ star

MAKE (the rest) • Snowball: cream 2½″ squares on all four corners of a green 8½″ • Unit: two stars and two snowballs, sewn like a checkerboard: 16½″ • Sew nine units in three rows of three, then the red 3½ × 48½″ sides and 3½ × 54½″ top and bottom

TIP: chain-piece all 144 red corners in one go, and keep the trimmed offcuts: sewn in pairs, they make tiny half-square triangles.

OTHER SIZES: 2 × 2 units with the same border make a 38″ baby quilt (8 stars); 4 × 4 make a 70″ throw (32 stars).
