How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a sweet and simple shoofly block today. It's a perfect first block.
The shoofly is a traditional nine-patch with triangle corners. Split its sides into strips and you've got its cousin, the churn dash.
Let's start with the corners. Lay a teal square on a cream one and sew a quarter inch each side of the diagonal.
Cut on the line, press toward the teal and trim to four and a half inches. Make a second pair for four corners.
Add four cream squares and a mustard centre, then turn the corners so the teal points into the middle.
Sew three rows of three and join them, nesting the seams. Your shoofly measures twelve and a half inches.
Twelve blocks and a teal border make a fresh, easy throw.

About this quilt
The shoofly: a traditional nine-patch with four half-square triangle corners, and a perfect first block. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Teal: two 4⅞″ squares • Cream: two 4⅞″ squares and four 4½″ squares • Mustard: one 4½″ square
MAKE • Layer each cream 4⅞″ square on a teal one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal • Cut on the line, press toward the teal and trim to 4½″: four corners • Lay out the corners with the teal toward the centre, the cream squares at the sides and the mustard square in the middle • Sew three rows of three and join them, nesting the seams
TIP: press the middle row's seams toward the centre and the outer rows' away, so the seams lock together.
OTHER SIZES: cut the triangle squares ⅞″ over the finished unit and the plain squares ½″ over. For a 9″ block: 3⅞″ and 3½″.
What would you put in the middle of yours?
