How it's made

Eight frosty arms, and not a single triangle to cut. Here's a snowflake star, made with stitch and flip corners.

Real snowflakes have six arms, but a quilter's square grid likes eight. White arms cross the block, and ice blue ones run corner to corner.

Start with the white arms. Two small white corners on a navy square make a forked tip, then sew it to a white strip.

Make four arms the same way. Ice corners on a white square make a little crystal for the centre.

Now the ice arms. Sew a navy five inch square corner to corner on an ice blue square, trim and flip, then do the opposite corner.

A navy corner over the tip shortens the arm, so it won't touch the next block. Make four.

Turn the squares so the ice arms meet in the middle, and the forked tips point out.

Sew it in three rows and join them. Your snowflake measures fourteen and a half inches.

Nine of them make a snowy winter throw.

About this quilt

A snowflake star in midnight blue, snow white and ice blue: eight frosty arms and a crystal centre, all from squares and stitch-and-flip corners, with no triangles to cut. 14″ finished (14½″ unfinished).

CUT • Navy: eight 5″ squares, four 2½″ squares and four 3½″ squares • Ice blue: four 6½″ squares and four 1½″ squares • White: four 2½ × 4½″ strips, one 2½″ square and eight 1½″ squares

MAKE • Ice arms: draw a diagonal on a navy 5″ square, lay it on one corner of an ice 6½″ square, sew on the line, trim ¼″ beyond and press out; repeat on the opposite corner • Square off the tip with a navy 3½″ square over one ice tip, the same way; make four • White arms: white 1½″ squares on the two bottom corners of a navy 2½″ square, stitched and flipped, then sewn to a white 2½ × 4½″ strip; make four • Centre: ice 1½″ squares on all four corners of the white 2½″ square • Lay out the ice squares with their tips in the block's corners, the white arms between them with the forks out, and the centre; sew three rows of three

TIP: sew a second line ½″ outside each big navy corner before you trim, and the offcuts become bonus half-square triangles.

OTHER SIZES: on a 1½″ grid it's 10½″ finished: 5″ ice squares with 3⅞″ and 2¾″ navy corners, 2 × 3½″ strips, and 2″ squares with 1¼″ corners.
