How it's made

A top hat, a red scarf and a carrot nose, and not a single curved seam.

Each snowball is a square with its corners sewn off, the same stitch and flip trick as the classic snowball block.

Start with the face. Two little black squares make the eyes, with white between and either side.

Two white corners on one end of an orange strip make a carrot point. Sew it into a white row.

Add white strips above and below, then sew sky squares across every corner to round the head.

Now the hat. Sew a red band under the black crown, a sky strip each side, then the wide brim.

Round a bigger white rectangle the same way, then sew the red scarf along its top.

Sew the hat on the head and sky strips down both halves. Stack them, with sky top and bottom so neighbours never touch.

Six snowmen and a red border make a cheerful winter wall hanging.

About this quilt

Build a snowman from squares: a top hat, a red scarf and a carrot nose, with no curved seams. 12½ × 19½″ unfinished (12 × 19″ finished).

CUT • Sky blue: two 1½ × 3½″, four 2″ squares, four 3″ squares, two 3½ × 9½″, two 2½ × 8½″, two 12½ × 1½″ • White: two 2 × 1½″, four 1½″ squares, one 3½ × 1½″, one 6½ × 2½″, one 6½ × 1½″, one 8½ × 7½″ • Black: two 1½″ squares, one 4½ × 2½″, one 6½ × 1½″ • Red: one 4½ × 1½″, one 8½ × 1½″ • Orange: one 2½ × 1½″

MAKE • Eyes: white 2 × 1½″, black 1½″, white 1½″, black 1½″, white 2 × 1½″ in a row • Nose: a white 1½″ square on each right-hand corner of the orange 2½ × 1½″, one at a time (stitch, trim, press); sew it between white 3½ × 1½″ and 1½″ • Head: white 6½ × 2½″, the eye row, the nose row, white 6½ × 1½″; then sky 2″ squares on all four corners • Hat: red 4½ × 1½″ under black 4½ × 2½″, sky 1½ × 3½″ each side, black 6½ × 1½″ brim below; sew it on the head • Body: sky 3″ squares on all four corners of the white 8½ × 7½″, red 8½ × 1½″ scarf on top • Sky 3½ × 9½″ each side of the head, 2½ × 8½″ each side of the body; join, then sky 12½ × 1½″ top and bottom

TIP: press the sky corners out toward the sky, so the seam doesn't shadow through the white.

OTHER SIZES: to make him twice as big, cut every piece at twice its size less ½″ (a 2½″ square becomes 4½″).

What would you name him? ⛄
