How it's made
Hi there! Let's head for the hills and piece a snowy mountain peak together.
The air gets colder the higher you climb, so mountain tops keep their snow long after the valleys melt.
First, the edge of the snow. Grey corners on the bottom of a white rectangle make a point, so the snow looks drifted. Make three.
Sew grey either side of the points, then stack a white strip on top and a wide grey strip below.
Here's the magic. Two big sky squares on the top corners turn it into a peak, and the white becomes its snowy cap.
Now green squares on the bottom corners make pine-covered foothills in front of the mountain.
Finally, sew a strip of sky on top and snowy ground along the bottom. What a view!
Side by side, the foothills meet in the middle and join into a whole snowy range.

About this quilt
A snow-capped mountain with a drifted snow line and pine-green foothills, pieced from squares and rectangles: no curves, no templates. 12½ × 8½″ unfinished (12 × 8″ finished).
CUT • Sky blue: two 6½″ squares, one 12½ × 1½″ • Grey: six 1½″ squares, two 3½ × 1½″, one 12½ × 2½″ • White: three 2½ × 1½″, one 12½ × 3½″, one 12½ × 1½″ • Green: two 3½″ squares
MAKE • Snow line: grey 1½″ squares on the two bottom corners of each white 2½ × 1½″ (a goose pointing down). Make 3 • Mountain: grey 3½ × 1½″, the three snow points, grey 3½ × 1½″ in a row; white 12½ × 3½″ above, grey 12½ × 2½″ below • Peak: sky 6½″ squares on the two top corners • Foothills: green 3½″ squares on the two bottom corners, one at a time • Sky 12½ × 1½″ on top, white 12½ × 1½″ ground below
TIP: the sky corners are big, so sew a second line ½″ outside the first before you trim, and you'll get two bonus half-square triangles from the offcuts.
OTHER SIZES: for a mountain twice as big, cut every piece at twice its size less ½″ (a 6½″ square becomes 12½″).
Side by side, the foothills join into green peaks between the mountains. Where would you hang a mountain quilt? 🏔️
