How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a cheerful little spool block for your sewing room.
It's named for the old wooden spools thread came on, and it's a lovely scrap saver.
Sew cream squares onto two corners of a walnut strip and flip them back. Make two, one for each end.
Next, the thread: sew a cream strip to each side of a red square.
Now sew the ends on top and bottom, and look, it's a little spool of thread!
Turn every other spool, and they weave together across the quilt.

About this quilt
The spool block, named for the old wooden thread spools: two shaped ends and a band of thread. 8″ finished (8½″ unfinished).
CUT • Walnut: two 8½ × 2½″ strips • Cream: four 2½″ squares and two 2½ × 4½″ strips • Red: one 4½″ square
MAKE • Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of each cream square • Lay two on the corners of one long side of each walnut strip, sew on the lines, trim ¼″ past and press out • Sew a cream strip to each side of the red square • Sew the spool ends to the top and bottom, the slopes facing the thread
TIP: cut the thread square from a stripe, turned so the lines run across, and it looks wound on.
OTHER SIZES: the ends and sides are a quarter of the block and the thread half; for a 6″ spool use 6½ × 2″ ends, 2″ corners, a 3½ × 3½″ thread and 2 × 3½″ sides.
