How it's made
Hi there! Let's make a pretty little square in a square block together.
This one's an old favourite, and you'll often hear it called the economy block.
Cut one rose square at eight and a half inches, and four cream squares at four and a half.
Sew cream squares onto two opposite corners, trim and press, then do the other pair. See how the points meet?
Side by side, the cream corners make a second set of squares on point.

About this quilt
Square in a square, also called the economy block: a centre set on point with four stitch-and-flip corners. 8″ finished (8½″ unfinished).
CUT • Rose: one 8½″ square • Cream: four 4½″ squares
MAKE • Draw a line corner to corner on the wrong side of each cream square • Lay two on opposite corners of the rose square, right sides together, and sew on the lines • Trim ¼″ past the stitching and press out • Repeat on the other two corners: the points meet in the middle of each side
OTHER SIZES: cut the centre ½″ over the finished size and the corners half the finished size plus ½″. For a 6″ block: a 6½″ square and four 3½″ corners.
TIP: a fussy-cut flower in the centre square makes each block a little frame.
What would you put in the middle of yours?
