How it's made

Hi there! Let's sail into a classic storm at sea block today.

Every seam in it is straight, yet set the blocks together and the sea seems to roll.

First, the long diamonds. Draw a slanted line on four sea-foam rectangles, one for each corner of a navy rectangle.

Lay two on opposite corners, sew right on the lines, trim and press them out, then square it back up.

Do the same on the other two corners, and there's your long diamond!

Make four diamonds. Then stitch and flip little foam squares onto a navy square, two opposite corners at a time, and make four of those too.

The centre's the same trick, only bigger, on an ocean blue square.

Turn two diamonds upright for the sides, then sew three rows of three.

Now watch what happens when you set them side by side. Can you see the waves?

Save this one for a rainy day. Design your own quilt like this at quiltler.com.

About this quilt

Storm at sea: every seam is straight, yet set side by side the blocks seem to roll like waves. Three units: long diamonds, small squares in squares and a big one in the centre. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT (one block) • Navy: four 6½ × 3½″ rectangles and four 3½″ squares • Ocean: one 6½″ square • Foam: sixteen 3¾ × 3″ rectangles, sixteen 2″ squares and four 3½″ squares

MAKE • Diamonds: on each foam rectangle, mark a line from one corner to a point 1⅞″ along the opposite short side (mirror it for the other corners). Lay two on opposite corners of a navy rectangle, sew on the lines, trim ¼″ past, press out and square up to 6½ × 3½″. Repeat on the other two corners. Make 4 • Small squares: stitch and flip 2″ foam squares onto a 3½″ navy square, two opposite corners at a time. Make 4 • Centre: stitch and flip 3½″ foam squares onto the 6½″ ocean square the same way • Sew three rows of three: small squares in the corners, diamonds on the sides (two turned upright), the big square in the middle

TIP: each slanted line runs from the middle of the rectangle's long edge to the middle of its short edge, ¼″ in, so the diamond's points land right on the seams.
