How it's made
Hi there! Let's stitch up a swamp angel today, a starry old classic in plum and honey gold.
The swamp angel is a cousin of the Ohio star. Swap its plain corners for triangle squares, and golden triangles frame the star.
First, layer cream on plum and sew a quarter inch either side of the diagonal. Cut, press and snip the dog ears.
Now lay one on the other, plum facing cream, and sew the other diagonal. Cut, press and trim to four and a half inches.
For the corners, pair cream with gold the same way. These come out at four and a half inches, ready to go.
Make four of each, add a cream centre, and turn the gold toward the middle. Sew three rows of three.

About this quilt
The swamp angel block in plum and honey gold: a cousin of the Ohio star, with triangle squares in the corners and hourglass points at the sides. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).
CUT • Plum: two 5¼″ squares • Honey gold: two 4⅞″ squares • Cream: two 5¼″ squares, two 4⅞″ squares and one 4½″ square
MAKE • Hourglasses: layer each cream 5¼″ square on a plum one and sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal. Cut, press and trim the dog ears (4⅞″). Pair them plum facing cream, seams nested, sew either side of the other diagonal, cut, and trim to 4½″: four hourglasses • Corners: layer each cream 4⅞″ square on a gold one, sew ¼″ either side of the diagonal, cut and press: four 4½″ triangle squares • Lay out the cream centre, the hourglasses with plum points reaching to the edges, and the corners with the gold toward the middle • Sew three rows of three
TIP: press the hourglass seams open and the corner seams toward the gold, so the rows nest.
OTHER SIZES: cut the hourglass squares 1¼″ over the finished unit, the corner squares ⅞″ over and the centre ½″ over. For a 9″ block: 4¼″, 3⅞″ and 3½″.
