How it's made

Hi there! Let's get started on a classic weathervane block, with points in every direction.

This traditional block takes its name from the weathervane on a barn roof. Its geese point north, south, east and west.

First, the little triangles. Sew a cream and a red square together on the diagonal, cut and press. You'll need eight.

Next come the geese. Stitch and flip cream squares onto both top corners of a red rectangle, and make four.

Now for the middle: a sky blue square, four little sky squares for its corners and four red rectangles around it.

Add four cream corners, then turn the geese so each one points out, and the triangles so the red hugs the centre.

Sew five rows of five and join them, matching the points. Your weathervane measures twelve and a half inches.

Twelve of them make a cheerful farmhouse throw.

About this quilt

The weathervane: a traditional star with flying geese pointing north, south, east and west, on a 6 × 6 grid. 12″ finished (12½″ unfinished).

CUT • Red: four 2⅞″ squares and eight 2½ × 4½″ rectangles • Cream: four 2⅞″ squares and twelve 2½″ squares • Sky blue: one 4½″ square and four 2½″ squares

MAKE • Layer each cream 2⅞″ square on a red one, sew ¼″ each side of the diagonal, cut, press and trim to 2½″: eight triangles • Stitch and flip a cream 2½″ square onto both top corners of four red rectangles: four flying geese • Lay out five rows: cream corners; triangles with the red toward the centre; the geese pointing out on each side; the sky squares and red rectangles round the sky centre • Sew five rows of five and join them, matching the points

TIP: press the rows in alternate directions so the seams nest at every point.

OTHER SIZES: it's a 6 × 6 grid, so a 9″ block uses a 1½″ unit: cut 2⅜″ triangle squares, 2″ squares, 2 × 3½″ rectangles and a 3½″ centre.

Which direction is your wind blowing today?
